11 Of The Most Iconic ‘General Hospital’ Supercouples Of All Time

Since General Hospital first premiered in 1963, the long-running ABC soap opera has been known for its memorable, swoon-worthy, and epic romances.

The daytime television medical drama originally followed a group of doctors and nurses working in the titular hospital in the fictional town of Port Charles in upstate New York. In the more than 50 years the show has been on the air, it's expanded more and more to include everything from vampires to mobsters to James Franco.

The popular soap opera is also ABC's sole remaining soap opera, after both All My Children and One Life to Live were canceled in 2011 and 2012, respectively.

There's a reason that GH has lasted as long as it has and has outlasted so many other canceled soaps — and that's because of their dedication to "Love in the Afternoon."

The show even defined the term "supercouple" back in 1981, when the OG supercouple Luke and Laura got married and a whopping 30 million viewers all across the country tuned in to watch.

We're taking a look back at some of the most iconic and memorable supercouples to ever appear on the series — chronologically ordered because I'm not even going to attempt to rank these over one another!

#1: Edward And Lila

As the patriarch and matriarch of one of General Hospital's major families, you can't have any list of supercouples without mentioning these two.

Introduced when both were already older, Edward and Lila were never one of the "passionate" soap couples. But their romance lasted decades, despite secret affairs and secret children.

And who can forget the heartbreaking episode when Lila died in her sleep in 2004, after her portrayer, Anna Lee, passed away in real life? The beloved Quartermaine matriarch's lessons still impact the show to this day.

#2: Luke And Laura

As mentioned above, Luke and Laura literally defined the word "supercouple." Their chemistry and adventures captivated audiences throughout the height of the soap's popularity in the 1980s and 1990s.

Despite Anthony Geary's retirement in 2015 and each of their new romances following the end of their relationship, there's no denying that Luke and Laura are still the quintessential General Hospital romance.

#3: Duke And Anna

Duke and Anna were one of the show's most popular couples, beginning when they met in 1986.

The spy and the mysterious Scotsman quickly fell in love. Every General Hospital fan remembers their wedding, when Duke rocked a traditional Scottish kilt.

Sadly, Duke was killed off in 1989. The pair reunited briefly in 2014 after a "back from the dead" twist — only for Duke to be killed off (yet again) in 2015. Despite the abrupt end to their romance, there's no doubt that Duke is Anna's greatest lost love. And who knows — maybe he'll come back from the dead a second time!

#4: Frisco And Felicia

Frisco and Felicia were massively popular throughout the 1980s and 1990s, at the peak of General Hospital's popularity.

The couple defined the quirk and over-the-top, adventure-driven storylines that the soap was experimenting with at the time — the two met when Frisco found Felicia, disguised as a boy, breaking into his apartment to look for an Aztec ring, because she was a descendant of Aztec royalty. See what I mean?

The chemistry between the two was magnetic and real, proven by the fact that this actor and actress were married in real life for 13 years, from 1993 to 2006. Jack and Kristina Wagner fell in love while portraying the supercouple.

Now, how's that for an epic soap romance?

#5: Sonny And Brenda

Sonny fans are split pretty evenly into two camps: those who love him with Carly, his current and most long-lasting love interest, and those who have never gotten over the magic of Sonny and Brenda.

The passion and chemistry between this couple was unmatched, from the moment they met in 1992.

Brenda's return, after 4 years of being presumed dead in a car crash, remains one of the soap's most powerful moments to date. I still get chills watching the scene where Brenda unexpectedly finds Sonny at St. Timothy's Church and he realizes she's alive!

#6: Stone And Robin

Though Stone was a relatively short-lived character, his relationship with Robin was one of the sweetest teen romances General Hospital has ever seen.

Stone was Robin's first great love,  which made Robin's heartbreak and grief  over Stone's death, at only 19 of AIDS-related complications, truly impacted fans. That story line was groundbreaking, and some viewers still aren't over this relationship over 20 years later.

#7: Lucky And Liz

The sweet teenage romance of Lucky and Liz defined General Hospital in the 1990s. Along with Nikolas and Emily, fans just couldn't get enough of the teen foursome.

Despite sharing three kids and multiple marriages and breakups, Lucky and Liz sadly couldn't make it work — at least not yet.

Both characters are still alive — even though Jonathan Jackson is no longer on the show — so there's always hope of yet another reunion!

In any event, the magic between the two of them will never fade from fans' memories.

#8: Sonny And Carly

If you weren't a Sonny/Brenda fan, odds are you preferred the seductive mobster with Carly, his four-time wife.

The pair share two kids and have broken up and gotten back together more times than almost any other couple on the show. The explosive and tumultuous romance is a fan favorite because it's just such quintessential soap opera drama.

Sonny and Carly have survived multiple affairs, miscarriages, the death of their son, and three different actresses playing Carly. Yet, they keep being drawn back together. Now it seems like nothing can keep them apart.

#9: Jason And Sam

Jason and Sam aren't everybody's cup of tea, but there's no denying that they're one of the most passionate and long-lasting soap couples on this list.

Jason, a Quartermaine and a legacy character, met Sam when she blew into town in 2003. Over the next 14 years, they dealt with affairs, lengthy relationships with other people, and even Sam allowing Jason's baby with Elizabeth to be kidnapped. Nevertheless, at the end of it all, they made it through and even have a baby boy and baby girl now.

#10: Patrick And Robin

"Scrubs," as fans call the doctor couple, is a uniquely successful supercouple because it's actually Robin's third major romance. Robert and Anna's daughter was also linked with Stone and later Jason.

But it's Robin's "endgame" relationship with Patrick that fans of the show have been adoring since Patrick rolled into Port Charles in 2005. Their daughter, Emma Scorpio-Drake, is one of the most popular soap kids ever.

And what other soap reunion can possibly top back-from-the-dead Robin interrupting Patrick's wedding to Sabrina? Nothing short of epic.

#11: Dante And Lulu

As one of the most prominent supercouples in the "newer generation" of General Hospital, fans who watched in the late 2000s when the couple met couldn't help but fall in love with this pair.

"Lante" survived a cheating incident, losing a baby, discovering another baby, and even divorce, but they came through it all stronger than ever.

Plus, it certainly helps that Lulu has supercouple blood in her veins, as the only daughter of Luke and Laura.
