One of the things I most look forward to every Halloween season is watching a slew of horror movies to scare me out of my wits.
While scary movies are released year round, there's something extra creepy about watching them during this particular holiday.
Some of my favorite horror films are classics like The Exorcist and the Poltergeist trilogy. I also love more recent horror hits, including pretty much anything from writer-director James Wan (but particularly The Conjuring and its sequel).
As much of a scary movie enthusiast as I am, I had absolutely no idea about the strange and downright terrifying stories of what happened behind the scenes of these films — or why people even claim that the movie sets and actors themselves were haunted.

1. The Conjuring
Several strange events plagued the filming of James Wan's 2013 horror hit.
In an interview with The Independent, actor Patrick Wilson recalled that Joey King, the teen actress who played one of the haunted kids in the movie, was covered in unexplained bruising after being on set. This mirrored what her character's mom went through in the movie.
James Wan also recalled a strange moment when he was working late one night and a dog on set began growling at an unseen entity.
2. The Amityville Horror
Actors in both the original film and the 2005 remake experienced unexplained events in connection with the movie.
The spookiest story involves Ryan Reynolds, who played George Lutz in the remake. Ryan recalled that he and other crew members kept on waking up at 3:15 a.m. every night during filming. 3:15 a.m. was reportedly the time that real-life killer Ronald DeFeo murdered his parents and siblings.
3. The Possession
This horror movie is based on a real item called a "dybbuk box," which is said to imprison evil spirits.
Star Jeffrey Dean Morgan recalled some "bizarre and inexplicable" moments on set in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Apparently, lights would explode mid-take or cold bursts of wind would suddenly blow through the closed set.
A mysterious fire also burned all of the movie's props — including the dybbuk box replica used for the film — days after filming ended. "We had all of our props a couple days after we finished wrapping — they put everything in storage for if you’re gonna do reshoots or anything," the actor said. "It burnt to the ground. It was investigated, and there were no signs of arson, no electrical fire."
4. The Exorcist
The classic demonic possession movie seemed haunted almost from the start.
According to Blumhouse.com, shooting was initially delayed for six weeks after the set caught fire and destroyed what was supposed to be the family's home. Two actors, Jack MacGowran and Vasiliki Maliaros, also died while the film was still in postproduction — and both of their characters had died in the film as well.
Linda Blair, who played the possessed Regan, was even seriously injured after being tossed around during one of the bed-shaking scenes.
5. The Ring
Some people claim that one scene of the Japanese horror film's American remake contains actual footage of ghosts.
Star Naomi Watts has commented on "weird vibrations" on set. The crew of The Ring 2 also recalled the production office being destroyed when it was flooded — which seems extremely significant when you consider villainous Samara's connection to water.
6. Poltergeist
The Poltergeist film series has long been the subject of rumors about a curse. People believed that the original film was cursed because several of the stars died tragically after filming.
Dominique Dunne, who played eldest daughter Dana, was murdered by her ex-boyfriend just months after the movie was released. Heather O'Rourke, the child star who played Carol Anne, was only 12 when she died shortly before filming of Poltergeist III was completed.
Many tie these deaths to the alleged use of real human skeletons during filming. JoBeth Williams claimed in an interview with TV Land that she didn't find out until later that what she thought were prop skeletons were actually real.
7. The Omen
Many mysterious incidents surrounded this film, even delaying its production.
These events included the suicide of lead actor Gregory Peck's son shortly before filming, lightning striking the actor's plane as he flew to London to film the movie, executive Marc Neufeld's plane also being struck by lightning shortly after, and an animal trainer being killed the day after The Omen filmed at the zoo.
8. The Exorcism Of Emily Rose
Actress Jennifer Carpenter, who played the leading role in the possession thriller, recalled inexplicably malfunctioning electronic equipment spooking people on set.
"Two or three times when I was going to sleep, my radio came on by itself," she told Dread Central. "The only time it scared me was once because it was really loud and it was Pearl Jam's 'Alive.'"
Jennifer also said that co-star Laura Linney's TV set would spontaneously switch itself on.
9. Introducing Dorothy Dandridge
In the 1999 biopic, star Halle Berry wore an actual gown that had been owned by Dorothy, the first African-American to be nominated for best actress at the Academy Awards. Unfortunately, Dorothy might not have been too happy to have someone else wearing her clothes.
Halle told Ebony magazine that she'd been visited by Dorothy's spirit both during and after filming. In one particular incident after filming wrapped, Halle had taken the dress home and kept it in her den, covered in plastic. One night, the actress claims she heard "the sound of water boiling" and saw a baby doll's dress floating in mid-air in front of Dorothy's dress.
10. Behind The Candelabra
During the shooting of Behind the Candelabra in 2012, an unnamed source told National Enquirer that stars Matt Damon and Michael Douglas were "convinced" that the movie set was haunted.
"Several times during filming, Damon and Douglas turned to each other after a scene and said, 'Did you feel that?' They swear they've felt cold damp air swish by, reeking of a potent men's cologne," the insider said. "[Michael] actually felt someone caress his shoulder. He whipped around — but no one was there! Not only that, but on several occasions prop lights flickered uncontrollably."
