The men and women who serve our communities as firefighters and rescue workers are frequently put in situations where they emerge as heroes.
Of course they should be commended for performing their normal duties, but quite often they find themselves going above and beyond.
And when I saw this story from October of 2015 about what rescue workers did to save two trapped farm animals, I was absolutely floored.
Firefighters and rescue workers in Dorset, England, received quite a shock when they arrived on the scene of their latest call. The team arrived to find two fully grown cobs — which are small horses — trapped in a dirty water-filled swimming pool.
Realizing that the horses must have fallen in the pool and would be unable to get out on their own, the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service sprang into action.

The incredible men and women at the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service teamed up with an animal rescue team to try to free the horses from the swimming pool where they were trapped.
The workers were called after the horses were discovered in the pool adjacent to a farm.
The rescue team wrote on Facebook that they began by "cutting away a significant section of undergrowth and shrubbery to make access."
It was decided that they would "free the horses using rescue straps and an animal slider board."
The workers fed the horses hay to keep them at the side of the pool while straps were prepared.
They wrote on Facebook, "The crews worked with a vet to sedate the horses before safely removing them from the pool."
Each horse had to be removed separately and required an incredible number of rescue workers due to their size and weight.
In fact, it took nearly a dozen rescue workers to pull the sedated horses to safety.
The rescue team wrote, "The horses were taken to an adjacent field and are recovering well."
The Sclater Equine Horse Vet who was on the scene wrote, "The cobs are both safe and well. It was great working with the Dorset Fire Service, who were excellent."
The incredible teamwork between the rescue workers and the vets truly made a seemingly impossible task possible. Their efforts to save these two horses is heroic and highly commendable!
