In 2016, nail trends are giving hair trends a run for their money. After all, why should hair have all the fun?
We've already shown you how to create nails that look like cable-knit sweaters, as well as nails that look like they've been decorated with sparkling crushed seashells, but now we've found a nail trend that's a little bit more unusual.
On Instagram, women everywhere are posting pictures of their "Pom-Pom Nails."
This colorful trend looks exactly like it sounds: nail artists are incorporating fluffy pom-poms of varying sizes into their manicures for a look that's ultra-cute — although not very practical!
If you're tired of the same old nails and looking for something that will really make people stop and stare (and probably ask you if you work as a clown) this is one DIY project you're really going to want to try.
Scroll through the images below to see all the different ways women are using pom-poms to turn their fingers into tiny cheerleaders!
There's no telling who first came up with the idea of pom-pom nails, but one thing's for sure: a lot of women are trying it!
We thought bubble nails were incredible, but pom-pom nails definitely take 3D nail art to a new level!
If you're pressed for time, you can buy premade pom-pom nails from online retailers…
…But it seems like creating them all by yourself might be the most fun part!
Some nail artists choose to go bold, with big pom-poms and bright, primary colors.
Others choose a look that's more subtle, with much smaller pom-poms in traditional muted nail colors.
Some even choose to shrink the pom-poms even smaller.
In this one, the poms form the fuzzy eyebrows of the tiny nail creatures that have been created with paint!
If you want to try pom-pom nails at home, first apply at least one layer of base color and allow it to dry completely.
Then, apply a topcoat but before it dries, and press your pom-pom firmly onto the nail.
When the topcoat dries, your pom-poms will be attached!
We've seen pom-poms attached on all parts of the nail, but if you want them to stay on for more than five minutes, nail experts recommend attaching them at the base of the nail right where it forms a U-shape with your finger.
While nails embellished with pom-poms look adorable, you've probably guess that they won't last very long.
InkYourNail explains: "You can expect them to keep them on for a couple of days provided that you exercise extra care in the use of your hands. The very nature of the pom-poms make them vulnerable to being soaked and losing shape or coming off the nail when exposed to too much water.
"You can try and use nail glue that is strong but still you have to consider the side effects of doing so and weigh it off against the need to constantly take care of your nails while the pom-poms are still on."
So file this one away under "special occasion" ideas, like a birthday party or a live sporting event. Then, you can make pom-pom nails the centerpiece of the celebration!
