Sometimes music can be a little… strange. And I'm not just talking about some of the more interesting styles our pop stars have rocked onstage in the past. The adaptable foundation of the craft means there's essentially an endless amount of ways for an artist to interpret and perform their instruments and create their own unique personal sound.
Taking inspiration from more traditional old wooden music boxes, Swedish musician Martin Molin crafted this much larger, far more intricate, and, to put it bluntly, bizarre version. I was so confused by it at first, but when Molin cranks the levers and pulleys, he releases 2,000 marbles inside the machine. This produces a beautiful song complete with rhythm and melody. While there are other similar contraptions found in the genre's sub-culture, most of those only serve a use for one tune. For his, Molin wanted to create something that would allow for variables and different compositions depending on the pattern of release. The project took over a year to complete, and Molin recorded the whole process to keep fans updated on his website.
After months of waiting, they finally premiered the impressive machine on February 29, 2016. Performing an original song, Molin begins by spinning the big wheels on the sides to get things going. Once the marbles are in swing, he flips a few switches, and suddenly it sounds like an electronica tune you'd hear on the radio! Featuring drums, bass guitar, vibraphone, and several other instruments, he has everything he needs to compose the delightful ditty on his own.
