At the age of 21, Allyson first learned she was hearing impaired. As she got older and became a teacher, wife and mother, her hearing slowly declined to the point she could barely hear her students. She wore hearing aids, but they only seemed to confuse the sounds and noises. For most of her life, Allyson relied on lip-reading.
After taking a new hearing test, Allyson found out she was eligible to receive a cochlear implant. In a video Allyson uploaded to YouTube in October 2015, she shares her first activation day. "It is very powerful and it was one of the happiest days of my life," she says. At first, the noises are loud and grating — but they eventually go away, allowing for the sweet sound of her mother and husband's voices to come through loud and clear. Perhaps the most incredible moment of all comes at the very end, when the implant technician asks Allyson's husband to say something to his wife. For the first time ever, Allyson hears her beloved husband say those three simple yet powerful words.
"I love you, Allyson."
Now, Allyson says she can finally tell the different between her husband’s voice compared to another male voice. Allyson writes on CI News, "I can close my eyes and distinguish between each one of my daughters’ voices. Another exciting factor is all the new sounds I am hearing again but took for granted before."
