What would you do if you saw a starving child scrounging for food on the streets? The New Zealand Police Recruitment decided to put strangers to the test with a social experiment called "Hungry Boy." The results are both surprising and heartbreaking.
The only actor in the video is the boy, and all of the reactions are 100% real. The organization recorded the scene for 35 minutes. In that time, about 500 people had the opportunity to see the boy. Three groups (seven people) and three individuals stopped to talk to him and offer help. The majority of people were too caught up in their day-to-day to notice the child, or they knowingly ignored him as he pulled food from the trash cans, his face covered in soot.
But NZ Recruitment wants to focus more on those who did help, than those who did not. "A few people have been mocking some people who didn't intervene — we're not into that," the team wrote on Facebook. "Our intention with these social experiments is to draw your attention to the people who noticed that someone needed help and had the empathy to intervene. People who don't intervene have a wide range of reasons – e.g. some people may not have even seen the boy eating from the bin."
