As much as I love going to the theater and watching the newest releases on the big screen, I can't help but feel like classic movies have just a bit more heart to them than the big-budget productions we're used to seeing today. I especially appreciate how those older films would take breaks for music every now and then, even if it wasn't something that was a musical.
One of my favorite examples is how Audrey Hepburn took a moment to sing a sweet melody in Breakfast at Tiffany's. You could also find the rough and tumble characters of the country western world enjoying a tune or two! While you might think of John Wayne as a stoic, stern cowboy in most of his flicks, this shows how even he can't help but smile when his costars croon a couple of classic campfire songs.
Wayne plays the town sheriff in 1959's Rio Bravo, and while he doesn't stretch his own vocal muscles for the scene, he clearly appreciates the talent he's surrounded by. Seasoned crooner Dean Martin lounges on the bed while popular newcomer Ricky Nelson strums his guitar. The pair are joined by Walter Brennan lending his harmonica skills as they harmonize beautifully on "My Rifle, My Pony, and Me."
It's incredible to hear how wonderfully the teen idol and Rat Packer blend their vocals for the old tune. Aside from the musical aspect, the film also marks the last time Wayne would wear his signature hat in one of his films.
