John Wayne Promotes ‘The Alamo’ While Appearing On ‘What’s My Line?’

These days, we can look forward to seeing our favorite celebs on late-night talk shows when they're promoting their newest venture. Things can definitely get pretty silly with hilarious hosts putting their guests through some fun and games during their visit. However, back in the early days, you could find big stars plugging their new movie, album, or TV show on actual game shows as well as the late-night slots.

One popular show with regular appearances from famous faces was What's My Line, which aired from 1950 to 1967. The episodes featured standard rounds with a panel guessing the occupation of contestants who would attempt to stump them with simple yes or no answers. The final round, however, had the panelists sporting blindfolds while they tried to discover which mystery celebrity was sitting right in front of them.

While some rounds are particularly difficult, like when comedy couple Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz fooled them with some goofy voices, they had no problem figuring out the actor in the 1960 clip below.

It only took three questions for them to suss out John Wayne's identity, but as journalist Dorothy Kilgallen explains, "I'm afraid our audience helped us on that, there aren't many who would get that much applause." Of course, the Duke sticks around to discuss his newly premiered epic film, The Alamo. Comedian Joey Bishop takes the opportunity to crack a few jokes, but Wayne handles them all in stride and with a big smile on his face.

Take a look to hear from the legendary cowboy, including the funny way he responds to each question.
