Judge Gives A Powerful Speech To Put Troubled Kids On The Right Path

A Georgia judge went viral for a lecture she gave to a group of students in order to encourage them to make better choices in life.

It was one of those unexpected courtroom moments (much like the time a felon sang for forgiveness), but one worth watching.

Bibb County Superior Court Judge Verda Colvin sternly spoke to the kids as part of "Consider the Consequences," a program through the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office that gives troubled youth a closer look into the prison system.

"You’re special. Stop being disrespectful to your parents. Care about your future. Be somebody. Anybody can be nothing. Be something. Care about yourselves. Do it. The only person stopping you is you. Do you understand me?" Judge Colvin said at one point.

Despite the impact of her speech, Judge Colvin said she had no idea the moment would be recorded in an interview with Atlanta's NBC affiliate 11Alive.

"It was never intended for publicity," she said. "For some reason, there was a decision to tape and I have to think it was predestined for this to happen."

She added, "I am hopeful and I'm inspired by the fact that this video may make a difference and make someone reach out in a way that they hadn't reached out to help our children."
