Helen Johnson walked into a Dollar General store. When she walked out, her life wouldn't be the same after a confrontation with Officer William Stacy. After a check got lost in the mail, Johnson's children had gone with without food for two long days. They were down to a single slice of bread. She scraped together $1.25, thinking it would be enough for a carton of eggs from the dollar store. When she came up 50 cents short, she did what she felt she had to do for her family in that moment. She didn't steal a carton of eggs, she stole five single eggs, she stuffed them into her pockets and headed for the door.
That was all she needed, just five eggs to get through this rough patch. As soon as she put the eggs in her jacket pocket, they broke. She still headed for the door. Just when she thought she had gotten away with it, Officer Stacy stopped her. He told her to wait. Johnson was sure he was going to put handcuffs on her, but instead he came back with a carton of eggs. Johnson tried to give him the money she had, but he refused.
"Sometimes the best route is to not arrest,'' Officer Stacy told AL.com. "I hope she won't do it again. I pray she doesn't, and I don't think she will. I felt like it was the right thing to do. I didn't want to pass judgment on her."
But it didn't stop from there. Food banks, neighbors, officers all began donating groceries to Johnson and her family. The fridge is now fully stocked.
"I don't know if he's an angel or godsend, but he was there for me and I appreciate every minute of it," she said.
