When Instructables DIY-er BrandonEcon and his fiancée were brainstorming what wedding favors to gift each of their party guests, they quickly settled on handmade coasters they'd create themselves out of rustic wooden logs.

First, they needed to gather the perfect pieces of wood.

They were looking for options with a circumference of 12.5 inches.

For this step, fallen branches or trees were perfect.

Chopping their logs into consistently even coasters required a steady surface.

These DIY-ers' stabilized their slicing setup, and clamped a piece of scrap wood half an inch from their blade as a guide.

To keep themselves safe during the sawing process, they only cut coasters from each log until the log was just shy of being too short for their clamps.

Once they reached this point with one log, they moved on to the next.

These DIY-ers used freshly-fallen logs, which still retained quite a bit of moisture.

Once they cut all of their coasters, they let them dry out on a shelf for about a week.

Letting the coasters dry out at their own slow and steady pace was essential to ensuring these gifts didn't cup or crack in any way.

After a sufficient drying period, these coasters were ready for sanding and finishing.

Once each coaster was thoroughly sanded, these DIY-ers could have applied a coat of stain.

However, for this project, they chose to leave their wood colored just as they'd found it.

To ensure the bark and moss would remain on each coaster, these DIY-ers rolled every round in a light coating of polyurethane.

Once the protective coatings dried, these coasters were complete!
