The men and women who serve in our militaries often miss out on a lot of big moments with their families. As much as it pains everyone involved, life still goes on while they’re away. Birthdays, graduations, even weddings and funerals all pass by without them there to stand by their loved ones’ sides. It can be heartbreaking, but it’s all part of their incredible sacrifice.
When they come home, though, they’re greeted by the happiest faces they’ve ever seen, especially when it comes to their children. Not having their mom or dad around for so long can be particularly rough, so it’s no surprise that things can get pretty emotional when they return.
Those emotions are even bigger when the serviceman or woman decides to keep their homecoming a secret until they’re right in front of them. That’s what high school student Michael had in store for him when his mom plotted with his sister to come home a week earlier than he expected.
While Michael spent the day going to his classes as usual, his mom hopped off the plane after six months away in Afghanistan. One hour later, she was walking through the halls of his school to take him out for a day of celebration. With his sister filming the whole thing, a staff member brings them to his room. They get a little lost at first, but it’s worth it when they see the look on Michael’s face when his mom steps through the door.
