For most couples, pregnancy is a joyous time. They get ready for the new baby by buying clothes, painting the nursery, and celebrating with their loved ones. Sadly, not every couple has this happy pregnancy experience. For some couples, bad news can arrive before the baby is even born. Or families find out the scary news after, like this family who is speaking out on the dangers of RSV.
Ben and Alyssa Reidhead thought they were visiting the doctor to learn the gender of their baby, but found out some terrible news. At only 23 weeks pregnant, it seemed their son's brain was growing outside of his skull. Doctors diagnosed him with encephalocele, a very rare disease. At the time, doctors believed there was very little chance of their son's survival. Because of this, instead of planning a baby shower, the Reidheads were planning a funeral.
The couple spent the remainder of Alyssa's pregnancy in fear, as they believed the worst would come. But when Alyssa delivered their son Will via C-section last week, a miracle happened. Rather than pass shortly after his birth, little Will was acting like a normal baby, despite the fact that he was born with another rare disease called cutis aplasia, meaning he was born without the back of his skull and instead a thin layer of membrane. Though the road ahead for Will won't be easy, he's already much further along than doctors ever anticipated!
