When it comes to using a public toilet, some people will build a nest of toilet paper or hoover over the bowl in order to prevent skin contact with the seat. But is it really necessary?
Our friends at Buzzfeed decided to get to the bottom of this question and asked the experts. William Depaola, an assistant professor of immunology and microbiology at The University of Southern California, reveals the shocking truth.
He notes that sitting directly on the toilet actually won't cause any type of infection! He actually says that most bacteria will come from NOT washing your hands after you use the bathroom. Just by washing your hands, you'll prevent spreading of any sickness to yourself and others. (Here are 13 things that are actually dirtier than your toilet!)
So next time you go to the bathroom, enjoy yourself and just have a seat. Just remember to wash your hands after you're done.
