To most, matchsticks are only good for one thing. Once they've served their flame-sparking purpose, they're usually just thrown away.
But guitar enthusiast and designer Dean Fraser had a very different idea: he created a guitar out of roughly 40,000 matchsticks.
Fraser started the project over 18 years ago, which is longer than most people stick with any hobby. Even more impressive than the time it took to complete the guitar is the fact that it is a fully-functional electric instrument. Having experienced as a luthier — those who make wooden, stringed musical instruments — professionally for several years, Fraser has already created over 100 guitars. His beautifully designed vintage guitars have garnered considerable attention online and his completed matchstick musical instrument is sure to create more hype around his craftsmanship.
The next time you have a few matches lying around and don't feel like arranging thousands of them to create a fiery inferno, consider the other amazing things they can be transformed into with time and patience.

Dean Fraser from Chorley began his ambitious musical matchstick project 18 years ago.
He started it while serving in the British Army, but was able to spend more time completing it after he retired from the military in 2013.
The guitar is comprised of over 40,00 matches and includes an input jack so that it can be plugged into amplifiers.
As a full-time luthier for several years, Fraser has created over 100 original guitars.
He makes both vintage and original designs that can be purchased on his website.
As stated on his website, Fraser takes inspiration from nature.
He also aims to create products that are both beautiful and playable.
“The aesthetics of the piece must resonate with playability and the quality of the sound. Ensuring the guitars I design and build have a practical application is a priority.”
Hip Hop artist B.o.B has even purchased one of his original designs.
Fraser's commitment to his craft along with his superb signature designs have caught the attention of many internet admirers.
With the completion of the impressive matchstick guitar, we are eager to see what interesting musical undertaking he takes on next.
