I have never been much of a gardener. And up until recently, I haven't had much space to plant anything. But moving into a suburban neighborhood has suddenly opened up some opportunities to grow something of my own.
After looking around on the web for some ideas, I came across a great DIY gardening project that may be beyond my limited skill set, but it's definitely worth sharing!
The project I found on Imgur was created by a few clever DIY-ers that knew they wanted a garden, but weren't exactly sure where to put it. Instead of building a regular box garden, they decided to do something a lot more interesting.
They utilized the space they had and created something beautiful for the whole neighborhood to see.

These DIY-ers began by mapping out their garden's location with some string and lawn pins.
They chose the sunniest spot right in their front yard.
Next, it was time to dig!
To get a flat surface, they dug up all the grass.
The base of the garden bed was built from cedar they had in their garage.
The main pieces of wood were 10-feet long and notched so that they crossed in the middle.
After soliciting some help from the neighbors, the bulky base piece was moved from the garage to the front of the house!
For added stability, they dug out extra holes for the four-by-four posts to rest in the ground.
The DIY-ers admit their measurements weren't exact, so they dug extra large holes to make sure all the pieces fit.
This step may not have been necessary since they dug up most of the grass underneath, but they had the materials available!
They laid down very thin cardboard and wet it thoroughly before filling the base with dirt.
Coincidentally, the DIY-er's neighbors happened to be digging up their yard at the same time this project was going on.
They used six car loads full of their neighbor's dirt to fill up the planter.
Finally, sitting rails were attached to the edges of the lowest levels, and the beds were topped off with some better soil and compost.
Already, their tomatoes and bean plants are starting to grow. Since it's late into spring, they plan on planting some squash next.
This one-of-a-kind tiered garden certainly is an upgrade that the whole neighborhood can enjoy!
