Have you ever seen a whale in your life?
Many coastal towns offer whale watching boat cruises, but it's not often you see an actual whale. You'll see a family or two of dolphins, but seeing a whale is pretty rare. And if you do see one, it's never for long, like this Humpback whale who made a brief appearance at a marina in Alaska.
Auckland University of Technology recently captured a thrilling video of a mother Bryde's whale grazing the ocean's surface. It is so rare to get this video, as Bryde's whales are critically endangered in New Zealand. There are believed to be less than 200 left in the area.
The footage is so moving because it shows this mother as she swims just below the surface, breaching the water to feed herself and her calf. It's a moment that we could not enjoy without the technology of drones. No one could have experienced this moment from a boat. The overhead angle gives us a clear look into what her day-to-day life must be like.
Watch the incredible footage below! How do you think we can help species that are endangered like this whale? We should all be as heroic as these men who saved a trapped calf!
Don't forget to SHARE this beautiful Bryde's whale with all of your friends and family!
