School In Chicago’s Dangerous South Side Sends 100 Percent Of Students To College

Graduating high school is no easy feat. But getting into college? That is even tougher. You need good grades, recommendation letters, and a killer college admissions essay. That's not taking into account the many schools that want applicants to have extracurricular activities.

But high school graduates can amaze you with their strength and brilliance, just like this graduating class who made the audience's jaw drop.

Chicago's South Side is notoriously known for being dangerous. In 2016 alone, there have been 261 homicides already. This has led to staggeringly low numbers of children being accepted to college. However, that is not the case for every school in the area.

Urban Prep is a lottery-based charter school in South Side, Chicago, that promotes high expectations. Founded in 2006 by Chicago native Tim King, the school facilitates many children who come from poverty. But the school's positively enriching environment has led them to defy all odds. Each student this year has been accepted to a four-year college.

That means that Urban Prep will be sending 100 percent of its students to college in the coming year. One graduate feels particularly blessed by this experience, having dealt with the dangerous side of the South Side firsthand. He is not the only one of these students beating the odds, but he's making his mark. He is the youngest of four and the first to go to college in his family. He'll be attending Hampton University, enrolled in their five-year MBA program.
