Think Halloween’s Just For Fun? The REAL History Behind It Might Spook You!

Nowadays, Halloween is simply a day when Americans dress up in costume and eat a bulk of candy for enjoyment.

But it wasn’t always a joyous occasion. Once upon a time, it was a day that made people tremble in fear.

These people were Celtic farmers who lived in prehistoric Ireland who, according to the History Channel, believed that evil spirits would rise from the dead on a day called Samhain, or “summer’s end.”

On this dreaded day, the Celtics lit fires and dressed up in an attempt to deter the wickedness.

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III attempted to stop this tradition by announcing All Hallows' Day. The Nov. 1 holiday was meant to honor all saints.

But his attempt was futile: Samhain turned into All Hallows' Eve. And, eventually, Irish emigrants brought it to America, where it slowly transitioned into what we know today as Halloween.
