Here at LittleThings, we share a lot of pet stories. Some are joyous, like two tiny dogs enthusiastically greeting their soldier owner who just returned home. Others, like a video of wiener dog who must be the winner of a race, are so hilarious and we end up watching them over and over again.
But unfortunately, one thing we see nearly as often as a funny cat compilation are pet abandonment stories. Every week we read heartbreaking tales of poor pooches and felines left on the streets to fend for their lives. In fact, just this week we brought you the sad story of CB, a poor pup locked in a carrier and left by the side of the road until some bikers with hearts of gold rescued her.
The American Humane Association reports that 7.6 million animals are brought into shelters each year just in the United States — and with that kind of statistic, we are not going to hear the end of these tragic accounts anytime soon.
Case in point, when World Animal Awareness Society — a nonprofit production company that films animals interacting with humans — tagged along with Sonya Franklin and Anna Barbosa on a ride through Houston’s Fifth Ward, they stumbled upon something heart-wrenching. Franklin and Barbosa are two volunteers from Houston K911 Rescue, which is a group that rides around neighborhoods and makes sure that strays have enough to eat. While making their rounds, Franklin pointed to one house, where the situation was dire…
“I don’t think these people have been here a minute since Christmas,” said Franklin, pointing to a house she believes has been abandoned.
“These dogs have been starving,” says Franklin, pointing to a black puppy that comes running her way as soon as the car stops. “She runs out on the street to try to get the ones sitting in the street waiting for my car to come.”
The black pup, which the group has named Izzy, signals to her sister, Sally, and both happily trot over to Franklin for food.
But these two puppies weren’t alone. From another litter, their younger sibling, Panda — who is clearly sick and undernourished — sat on the porch scared, shivering, and starving.
Yet, soon enough, the hungry little tykes are chowing down on much-needed grub from the volunteers.
Panda particularly enjoyed his meal.
But it’s clear that these dogs need much, much more than just some food to become healthy.
It seems like the world has abandoned these pups. Even their mom, a shar-pei named Sonya, seems to have checked out. She sits passively watching her kiddos eat while continuously scratching herself.
Down the street, another dog hungrily looks on.
Tom, a pit bull tied to a tree, was also found on the discarded property.
The volunteers rescued Panda, Izzy, and Sally and took them to Adore Houston where they received medical attention and a shot at finding loving homes.
They later came back for Sonya and Tom, who are now up for adoption as well.
