Going to the zoo is a treat we all love, young or old. There are few things more entertaining than watching creatures we wouldn't normally ever encounter in or around our homes. Animals from all over the world are brought to one place, and are cared for by humans who want to help endangered species thrive and be able to survive in numbers in the wild. So it's a special treat when we get to see these tiny babies interact with their parents and with others!
The Perth Zoo just welcomed a new addition to its animal family: a baby Goodfellow's tree-kangaroo. You've likely never heard of the species, as it is only native to Papua New Guinea.
This is the zoo's first tree kangaroo birth in 36 years.
The species is endangered and officials and wildlife enthusiasts everywhere hope that a worldwide breeding program will help the species' numbers rise. The little one, named Mian, was born six months ago, though he was only revealed recently. He is one of only 15 males in the program. Hopefully, his birth will help reinvigorate the species over the next few years!
