I have always admired those people who are able to walk into a consignment store, pick out a few items, and turn the once-loved purchases into something new and more useful.
For me, I walk into a secondhand shop and immediately get overwhelmed by the sea of lamps, knickknacks, and furniture. For others, the items in these stores look like pieces to a puzzle. They just have to take it all home and put the pieces together.
A fun couple named Mark and Theresa, who we found on the DIY website Instructables, have a knack for home improvement and making old items new again.
A friend of theirs challenged them to create a tiki torch for their backyard out of unusual items. The couple was happy to take the challenge.

Mark and Theresa were challenged by a friend of theirs to build a tiki torch out of unusual items found at their local consignment shop.
They scoured the aisles looking for the right materials to use for their fun project.
They were thinking of picking up a hockey stick or a shovel handle until they came across a pair of old skis for just $1!
The creative juices started flowing, and they knew exactly what to do.
In total, the supplies from the shop came out to be only $5!
Mark began the build by creating a base for the torch to sit in.
Theresa worked on stripping the skis that would act as the tiki stand.
Next, she collected her materials to prime and paint!
She ran to her local Walmart to pick up some Krylon's SuperMaxx Gloss Yellow and Hammered Finish in Copper.
These materials are fast-drying, perfect for a quick afternoon project.
After allowing everything to dry, the DIY-ers used Gorilla Glue Construction Adhesive to hold the two skis together.
Next, a little wooden block that Mark cut out was attached to the skis. This acted as the base of the torch.
Next, Theresa added some glue to the bottom of the glass jar to attach to the wooden block. This piece would hold the actual torch.
The project was almost complete!
Theresa decided to add some copper details for some extra shine.
After adding the goblet and wick to the glass jar, these clever DIY-ers finished up their quick and easy tiki torch project!
