Weddings are made special thanks to traditions passed down from family and communities. In the military, there are many incredible traditions that make the day memorable.
A common tradition at Navy and Marine weddings is The Arch of Swords. It is an old English and American custom which is seen as a pledge of loyalty to the new couple from their military family. Only the groom and bride are allowed to pass under the arch. The custom usually calls for six to eight service members to partake in the arch.
Melanie and Nick were married on June 11, 2011. Their friends and family traveled to St. Louis, MO, for the wedding, including Nick's Navy buddies. The men in their Arch of Swords are graduates of the United States Naval Academy, including Nick!
In order to pass each set of men, Nick and Melanie are required to pay a toll. They must kiss! This is a beautiful ceremony, and it is made even more special by these dedicated men!
It is wonderful to see the groom's military family rally around him and his new bride! Just like these Marines who sang to a bride on her special day. Have you ever attended a wedding that had the arch of swords?
Don't forget to SHARE this beautiful military wedding with all of your friends and family!
