Four Nurses Save Mother In Labor During Horrific Tornado

It was horrifying. A massive tornado ravished the Moore Medical Center, but four nurses rose above the natural disaster to become heroes. A mother, Shayla Taylor, was in the middle of giving birth when the hospital began to evacuate. Due to an epidural, Taylor could not move. Her baby wasn't doing well either. The mother and son needed to be monitored closely through the process.

The floors began to shake, the lights began to flicker, as the tornado directly hit the hospital. One photograph even shows that it tore the walls around them down. That's when four nurses, Alyson Heeke, Cindy Popejoy, Barbara Brand, and Bonny Stephens, decided to stay.

"We actually were on the floor," said Heeke. "Bonny the scrub-tech was kind of leaned over her a little more. We had blankets and pillows all around her. We were holding onto each other — and the bed."

No one knew if any of them were going to make it. They carted the mother out into the hall. Taylor delivered her baby boy and somehow, through it all, everyone in the hospital survived. Taylor, who is studying to be a nurse, is even more inspired by these four women.

"Those nurses are amazing," she said.
