Losing a child is perhaps every parent's worst nightmare. It's a terrible event you never expect or hope to experience in your lifetime — after all, kids are meant to outlive their parents and have families of their own.
But sometimes, terrible accidents happen and parents grieve the loss of the fruit of their labor. Parents pour so much love into raising their children, it's impossible to understand what it's like to lose a son or daughter without having it happen to you.
Sally Yabra is one of those unfortunate parents. She lost her eldest son, Jonathan Baksh, after a swimming accident. The teen reportedly screamed for help three times before drowning.
But as the mom discovered, this wasn't the only time an accident like this has occurred.
And if this danger was so common, why didn't more parents know about it?
The hidden threat she is now advocating against is the seemingly innocent activity of jumping into and swimming in quarries. Every summer, kids and teens die after failing to understand their surroundings. Jumping from a high position can be deadly. Even the bottom of the quarry can hide traps like debris and sudden changes in depth and temperature.
Now, a year after her son's death, Yabra is trying her best to make sure every parent is aware of all the dangers associated to swimming in quarries, and is urging everyone to avoid the activity. You can read more about the dangers in her petition, which you can sign here.
