Grass-Covered Cob Playhouse Is A Fun Way To Keep Kids Cool During Summer

As a kid, my parents would always encourage me to go play outside. And while I was generally happy to oblige, there were some days that were just too hot to be enjoyable.

But for one DIY dad, the hot weather was a challenge he couldn't wait to take on, as he built his son a naturally cool playhouse in the backyard.

This playhouse truly is unlike anything I've ever seen, with a grass-covered roof and large branches as porch supports. And because the tiny house features cob walls, this dad calls it "one of the coolest spots on the property during the blistering hot summer heat."

Scroll through below for a look at this one-of-a-kind cob playhouse. And perhaps the best part of all? It only cost this DIY-er $30 to create!

He decided to go with a unique cob house, utilizing natural clay from the ground where they live.

This DIY-er writes, "This project was spaced out over two months to give each step plenty of time to dry, settle, harden, and adjust."

For what he calls "the living roof," he layered tar, gravel, an old cotton rug, and soil in a five-inch deep area.

He also included plenty of drainage so the rainwater could run right out.

For the inside, this DIY-er caulked and painted to create a play area for his son that would not only keep him cool and comfortable, but also provide hours of entertainment.

He placed sand in the front of the playhouse so his son would be able to play comfortably under the shade of the porch awning, too.

The playhouse is modeled after other larger cob homes, such as this one.

To qualify as this type of house, the building materials need to consist of some combination of soil, sand, or clay, mixed with water and other organic materials.

Not only are these cob homes beautiful, but they are also extremely inexpensive to make because they require so few store-bought materials.

Some cob homes have living roofs similar to the playhouse, while others use more traditional materials.
