As happy and carefree as these children initially appear in the video, they’ve been through more than most of us could possibly imagine.
They have all lost a parent whose lives were given in the line of duty to protect their community.
"My son was 3 when his dad was killed," says Cindy Roberts, the widow of Tampa Police Corporal Mike Roberts. "He noticed a suspicious person and stopped to question them."
These heartbreaking tragedies happen all too often, but a children’s summer camp is now working to provide support and healing for the families of lost loved ones.
Police have been increasingly spotted building a relationship with young people in their local communities. There was that officer who danced with a whole group of children, and of course, the cops who proceeded to have an all-out water fight with kids.
Connecting early is always key! And that’s what the Concerns Of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) is doing with their service, which has already been absolutely invaluable to the children who attend their summer camp.
“Each year, between 140 and 160 officers are killed in the line of duty, and their families and coworkers are left to cope with the tragic loss,” they said. “C.O.P.S. provides resources to help them rebuild their shattered lives. There is no membership fee to join C.O.P.S., for the price paid is already too high.”
