There are certain items whose beauty and charm lies in the way they capture the style of a time period. Maybe it's a beautiful art deco piece of furniture. Maybe it's a stunning vintage gown. There are all kinds of things with the craftsmanship and beauty to stand the test of time.
And then there are things that have good bones and solid quality, but that really could use an update and a little love.
That's how Kelli of Ks Craft Shack felt about a little jewelry cabinet she happened upon in a thrift shop. It was made of sturdy wood, but was nicked and scratched. It had cute opening doors with clear acrylic patterns, but the inside lining was stained and worn, and the doors were decorated with a dated design.
But Kelli could see that underneath the wear and the '70s-era mustard velvet, there was a lot of potential. And potential obviously means it's makeover time!
The great thing about makeovers is that they allow something old to live on and be a enjoyed a little longer, and they can be performed on anything, from a tiny accessory like this jewelry box to an entire five-bedroom house.
Check out how this jewelry box went from mustard to modern below, and it might just inspire you to spruce up something of your own!

Kelli of Ks Craft Shack spotted this jewelry box in a thrift store while visiting some family.
She'd been looking for a jewelry box and loved the shape of this one, but the color scheme and painted door panels? Not so much.
"I'll start by saying that my mom thought I should leave the jewelry box as-is," she says. "I usually listen to her, because she's usually right."
But when it came to the scuffed-up wood and the stained, worn-out, mustard yellow lining, Kelli just couldn't.
So it was makeover time!
She started by deconstructing the box. She tore out the lining and removed the window panels, which were acrylic, not glass.
After giving the box a good cleaning, she used acetone to strip the painted design off the windows.
She wanted a more subtle textured look on the windows rather than the busy design, so using glass paint and a fan brush, she created this swirling design, then added a layer of silver paint for a layered texture.
Next, the old wood was given a coat of chalky finish paint. The outside was painted a dark, slate gray, and the drawers and inside of the cabinet got a coat of soft, light gray.
Everything was sealed with varnish for durability.
Using the old yellow velvet as a template, Kelli was able to easily create new lining in a matching fabric.
This gray patterned fabric is a perfect balance between timeless and modern.
Now, the jewelry box has a clean, modern look in cool grays when closed. It's much less busy than it was originally.
When opened, the fabric lining peeks out for some flair, but it still has an updated look that can be enjoyed for years to come.
