Prom is seen as the pinnacle of every high schooler's experience, but in the 1940's, Ralph and LaVerne Wozniak never got the chance to attend.
"We didn't have a prom because it was war time," Ralph told Tampa Bay ABC affiliate WFTS.
Ralph enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in World War II overseas. After the war, he hoped to ask LaVerne to prom. But before he could, he was called up for duty in Korea.
The couple, who met at a USO dance, later married in 1949 in Milwaukee. They watched their four children go to prom but wished that one day they'd be able to have their own prom moment.
After 66 years, the Wozniaks finally got to go to prom. On June 18, the couple got all spiffed up and hit the dance floor for their first prom dance at Hillsborough County Aging Services Senior Prom last week, where Ralph was crowned prom king.
"He's going to be king for the whole year," said LaVerne. "It gave us something we actually could celebrate. That was everything. It was very, very nice. It's something we'll be remembering for a long time."
"It just made us feel alive again," said LaVerne.
