Gone are the days of normal clay face masks.
A few months ago, all these wacky face mask photos started showing up on the internet. People were using face masks that cracked and made them look 100 years old, face masks made out of gold, and face masks that bubbled as soon as you put them on.
It was this last one that fascinated me the most. A clay mask that fizzes and expands as soon as it touches your skin? I was very intrigued.
The most popular of these bubble face masks is the Elizavecca Milky Piggy Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask.
The carbonated bubble face mask is supposed to detoxify and clarify your skin while also removing blackheads and exfoliating your pores.
My oily skin could use all the help it can get, so I was really excited to give this bubble face mask a try — but I didn't know what to expect when I opened the box.
The Product
The mask claims that it "washes off pores and dirts on your face." For only $9, it's a great price for a popular face mask.
The mask is made up of charcoal, clay mud, and carbonated water.
The charcoal and mud absorb excess sebum and makeup while also tightening pores. The carbonated water provides a soft massage for your pores and skin.
How To Use the Mask
The bubble face mask is really easy to use. According to the instructions:
“Scoop a proper amount of the Elizavecca Milky Piggy Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask and spread evenly on dry, uncleansed face.
"Wait for 5 minutes until bubbles start to appear, then gently massage it all over the face to melt down dirt. Rinse off with lukewarm water."
The Experiment
The mask claims it can help with excess oil and sebum — and my oily skin definitely needed some help.
I have a lot of blackheads and whiteheads, so I was hoping that my skin would see some amazing benefits from the mask.
Before
My skin didn't look too bad before using the mask — but I had a few significant pimples on my chin and along my jawline.
I always look forward to using face masks, but this time I was even more excited, since I'd never tried a carbonated mask before.
Using the Mask
When I opened the jar, I was glad that it came with a little spoon spreader. I was surprised to notice that the mask was actually kind of rubbery.
I started smearing the mask onto my face, and it immediately started bubbling.
The clay was very soft, not gritty like some other masks I've used before.
As soon as the mask was on my face, it started changing color and expanding from the carbonation.
Since the bubbles are so small, it ended up making my face look kind of fuzzy!
Although I could see the mask growing and bubbling, it didn't feel like much was really happening.
After two minutes, I thought the mask was done bubbling, but I was wrong.
While some masks start to dry out and feel like they're tightening your skin, this one continued to feel soft and moist.
Just before washing off the mask, you're supposed to rub it into your skin.
When I started rubbing the mask with my fingers, I was stunned that it still felt so soft — it kind of felt like smearing shaving cream onto my face.
After
Once I washed off the mask, I didn't see a huge difference.
As my skin dried, though, I noticed there was significantly less oil on my face, and my pores felt a little tighter.
The next morning, my face was oily again, but that's what I expected.
Final Thoughts
Would I use this mask again? Yes, absolutely! Although I didn't notice as many immediate benefits as I have with other masks, my skin still felt better than it had before I used the mask.
Would I recommend this mask to a friend? Definitely! It's a really fun face mask to use, and it's not very expensive for an at-home skin treatment.
