On days when I'm frustrated, upset, or feeling like I'm the victim of some injustice, stories like this one remind me just how lucky I have it. I wish I had even half the positivity of the young man featured in the photos below.
Recently, a med student in the Philippines snapped a photo of a young boy outside of a McDonald's. He was well known around the neighborhood. He lost his father and his house in a horrible fire and for many months, he would be seen out in the streets, often begging for money with his mother, but it's the situation surrounding the the photo that has thousands of people sharing his story.
According to a 2013 report from the National Center for Family and Homelessness, 1 in 30 kids here in America is homeless. These children are automatically disadvantaged in life before they've even really been given a chance to begin, and too often we completely ignore them and their situations. One social experiment videotaped a boy posing as a homeless person begging for change in five-degree weather, and no one stopped to help him for over two hours — except for a homeless man who understood his situation.
When you read about this young boy and his story, please take a second to consider sharing his story with others. No child should be in his situation, but hopefully we can all gather some inspiration from this young man's drive and determination.

The 9-year-old boy, Daniel Cabrera, was seen by Joyce Torrefranca, a medical student. It was late at night, and Cabrera was sitting alone outside of a McDonald's. Torrefranca stopped to take two photos of the young boy once she realized what he was doing.
She asked him what he was doing, and he said that he needed to get all of his homework done. The light from the McDonald's window was the only place bright enough on the streets for him to see his homework.
There are many people who would find themselves in that position and they'd give up hope, or turn to taking desperate measures to get by. But Daniel still spends his nights doing schoolwork and trying to improve his education.
Thousands have reached out to Daniel and his mother to give them support and to make sure that Daniel continues his education. He recently told reporters that it's important for him to study hard because he aspires to become a cop so that he'll be able to
