Actor Tom Selleck Sued For Stealing Water During California Drought

In the midst of an ongoing drought in California, actor Tom Selleck is under fire for allegedly stealing water from a public hydrant to nurture his avocado ranch.

The Calleguas Municipal Water District in Ventura County sued the Magnum, P.I. star saying a truck took water to his 60-acre ranch for 18 months. While Selleck isn’t facing any criminal charges, he’s being sued for almost $22,000 to cover the cost of the district’s investigation.

The district also wants the actor to let his avocado ranch be in order to comply with the state’s efforts to cut back on water use. California's water use was decreased by 29 percent in May alone.

The drought, which some believe is due to climate change — actor Robert Redford backed that belief at the United Nations — is one of the most severe in the state’s history. In January 2014, Governor Jerry Brown even announced a State of Emergency.

“It’s really about doing the right thing and preserving our water supply for our users,” the water district’s resources manager Eric Bergh told NBC News.

Some Twitter users are just as angry the Calleguas Municipal Water District calling his act "shameful" and "bizarre." Some others believe he should be penalized.
