Police have captured the alleged mother and kidnapper of 3-year-old Lilly Abigail Baumann after the two disappeared more than a year ago.
Florida resident Megan Everett, 23, reportedly fled with daughter Lilly, then 2 years old, after her father Robert Baumann, with whom Ms. Everett shared joint custody, had decided to have her vaccinated.
Ms. Everett was reported to have been living in a trailer with Lilly in Palatka, Florida, and was discovered only after a neighbor recognized the two after watching an episode of CNN's The Hunt, on which the story of the kidnapping had been featured.
Police immediately implicated Ms. Everett after finding a note left for her then-boyfriend Carlos Lesters. “You are a great dad,” the Washington Post reports the note read. “If I let them take her and vaccinate her and brainwash her, I wouldn’t be doing what’s right. I cannot let a judge tell me how my daughter should be raised. We will miss you. But I had to leave.”
Baumann had allegedly reported feeling uncomfortable with Lesters' interest in guns, with the Sun Sentinel reporting, "Baumann said he was uncomfortable with his toddler daughter being around guns and ammunition."
"It's just been tough not knowing if we were ever going to get my daughter back or not," Lilly's father told reporters. He added, "It's going to be a long, tough road. But like I said, it's going to end up being okay. She's going to be safe now, so that's all that matters to me."
