You'll likely remember last year's viral video of a woman who walked the streets of New York City for 10 hours on camera, finding herself the victim of a barrage of catcalls and inappropriate commentary by male passersby.
What followed that video was a video was an outpour of shared experiences by women who'd also experienced or continue to encounter lewd commentary on their commutes, apropos of nothing. It sparked a national conversation about the safety of women in our communities and the invasive nature of catcalling, a practice both archaic and offensive. And according to statistics provided from Hollaback in the video below, "96 percent of American women 40-years-old and younger experienced street harassment in the past year."
Since then, other similar videos have cropped up on the web. Most recently, Cosmopolitan released a video of men reacting to footage of their girlfriends being catcalled. A similar video below chronicles the reactions of fathers whose daughters are being spoken to inappropriately by complete strangers.
It's worth stating that there's a strong possibility that this footage could be doctored; however that being said, it wouldn't be too far off to assume the responses of many fathers hearing their daughters be verbally accosted regularly on their walks down the street would sound similar — perhaps even more heated. But any conversation about the nature of sexual harassment helps bring attention to this important topic, and if nothing else, so does this video.
(Please be warned: There's some understandably strong language in parts of this video that may be inappropriate for some viewers.)
