Impress Guests At Your Next Party With Mason Jar Cupcakes

The cupcake is a pretty perfect dessert. It’s tiny, delicious, and can be eaten in about three bites.

So how does one improve upon the flawlessness of this cute confection? It almost seems pointless to even try — like trying to improve upon the wheel, a rocking chair, or the flavor of bacon. It’s great the way it is, so why change it, right?

Wrong! Here at LittleThings, we're always looking for ways to enhance our flavor experiences — like the time we made an incredible bacon weave taco shell.

And now, we've found a way to upgrade your cupcake-eating experience to a whole new level of yum. This insanely easy recipe triples the amount of cupcake you can fit into your mouth, and it’s also a really great way to wow guests at a party or potluck.

To make this ultimate cupcake experience at home, all you'll need is a muffin tin, a few Mason jars, cooking spray (or cupcake liners) and a few very basic ingredients.

When you're done, you'll have a dessert that's as adorable as it is delicious! Let us know in the comments if you'll be trying this out yourself.

To make this easy and delicious cupcake hack, all I needed was box cake (and all its required ingredients), vanilla icing, red food coloring, two Mason jars, and some sprinkles.

First, I mixed my box cake ingredients to create a chocolate batter.

Then I filled a muffin tin with cupcake liners and filled each cup with batter. I like to use an ice cream scoop’s worth of batter for each cup. That way, each cupcake ends up being the same exact size.

Once the muffin tin was filled, I popped it in the oven and let it bake according to the directions on the back of the box. While it baked, I took my red food dye and added a few drops to the vanilla icing. I wanted a pink color, so I only used a few drops.

When the cupcakes were done cooking, I took them out of the oven and let them cool. When they were cool to the touch, I grabbed 2 cupcakes and sliced the tops off.

I needed the tops to be completely flat.

I then dropped the first flattened cupcake into a Mason jar.

Next, I added a layer of my pink frosting.

Then I threw in some rainbow sprinkles.

Next, I added my second flattened cupcake. On top of this, I added another layer of pink frosting.

I couldn't resist the urge to add another layer of rainbow sprinkles...

For the final layer, I added a normal, non-sliced cupcake — and another layer of icing, of course!

And for the final touch, I finished it off with — what else? — some more rainbow radiance.

The end result is a pair of Mason jar cupcakes, just like tiny versions of a layer cake!

It’s a really cute dessert that would be perfect for a party, potluck, baby shower, or kid's birthday.

Although each cake is probably enough to feed three people, it’s so good that you may just want to gobble it up all for yourself!

Ingredients:

  • 1 box cake (and all required ingredients)
  • Frosting
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles (optional)
  • 1 Mason jar per three cupcakes

Directions:

  1. Make and bake the box cake according to the directions.
  2. Spoon the batter into muffin tins. Bake according to the box directions. Allow to cool once done.
  3. When cooled, cut off the tops off two cupcakes per Mason jar. Always leave a third in tact.
  4. Put a flattop cupcake and the bottom of a Mason jar. Add a layer of frosting and sprinkles.
  5. Repeat step 4.
  6. For the final layer, add your regular, un-cut cupcake and decorate it as well.
  7. Get a spoon out and chow down!

Keep in mind you can mix and match cake and frosting flavors, along with food dye and sprinkle colors, to make any combination you want: red velvet with cream cheese frosting and silver sprinkles; confetti cake with blue vanilla frosting and chocolate sprinkles… Let your imagination run wild!
