It began as any other June day in 2009, but things eventually turned harrowing for a mother and her 4-year-old son, who would later be lauded as a tiny hero.
Fort Wayne, IN resident Jamie Coder says that she was knocked unconscious after slipping down a flight of stairs. The only other person in the family's home at the time was her terrified 4-year-old son, Alex, who barely hesitated before doing what Mom had taught him a hundred times.
Picking up the phone and dialing 911, Alex began to repeat the location of the family's house to the dispatcher the only way he knew how: He sang his address through a song his mother had taught him just a week before when the family had moved into their new residence.
"With the littleness and the shrillness in his voice, it was hard to get the address at first, but he was very awesome and repeated it over and over," Emergency Dispatcher Manda Overly told NBC Chicago. "He told me that Mommy fell down. We just got help there as soon as we could."
Jamie, who recovered with little injury after receiving medical attention, told NBC she was "very proud" of her little hero. "This is something he probably will remember for the rest of his life, but he may not understand why they're doing all this celebration."
