Deodorize Your Carpet With Just Two Ingredients

Carpets, as soft and luxurious as they can be, tend to be difficult to upkeep.

They seem to absorb everything: musty odors, dust and particles, hair and fur… And while thorough vacuuming can help remove debris, often, it does nothing for the lingering smells.

Since we can't all own lovely hardwood floors — like this couple who built a very unique cordwood floor — we homeowners have to get creative when it comes to carpet maintenance.

That's why I was floored (no pun intended) when I saw how this clever DIYer used just two ingredients to keep their carpets smelling fresh and clean.

But it's not just the mixture itself that's brilliant; the container she invented is not just creative, but it's adorable and practical, too!

To keep her carpets smelling fresh and clean, this clever woman gathered some simple supplies: namely baking soda, essential oils, and a Mason jar.

She poured one cup of the baking soda into the jar. Spice jars or glass shakers could also work instead of Mason jars.

She then added the essential oils to the baking soda. Stronger essential oils, like rosemary or peppermint, only need 20 drops — whereas lavender or citrus could use 30 drops.

Once she'd added the essential oils, she closed the jar and shook everything together. (If you can't smell the essential oils, add more!)

To make a shaker top, she punched holes in a piece of card stock, which she'd cut to fit the jar.

To use it, she shakes the deodorizer all over the carpet, lets it sit for 20 minutes or longer, and then vacuums it up. She's always careful not to leave any on the carpet, as essential oils can irritate sensitive skin.
