In October of 1966, a military doctor named Dr. Sam Axelrad amputated the arm of a North Vietnamese soldier, ultimately saving his life. After escaping firefight and hiding in a warehouse for three days, a US helicopter picked up the injured soldier, Nguyen Quang Hung, and brought him to to a low-cost military hospital. They could have killed him or sent him to a prisoner-of-war camp, but instead the doctors took care of him.
After recovering from surgery, Hung spent six months assisting American military doctors. He has since retired on his rice farm in Vietnam and is now 75 years old.
In 2013, the now-retired civilian doctor flew back to Vietnam to meet the amputee — but he came bearing a very bizarre and oddly touching gift. You see, when Dr. Axelrad flew home from Vietnam after the war, he took with him a strange souvenir of sorts: Hung's very own arm bones, which he reconstructed and kept intact for nearly 50 years as a reminder of a good deed during a dark time of war. But after 47 years of no contact, Dr. Axelrad was successful in finding Hung's whereabouts. He flew all the way back to Vietnam to reunite with the war veteran and return his rightful arm. What happened next is nothing short of incredible!
