Inspiring New Documentary Shows What Life Is Really Like For Transgender Kids

This inspiring story comes to us from our friends at AOL.com.

Meet Paddy, a 7-year-old transgender girl from Leicester, England. This brave little girl is now one of the stars of the British documentary series, which tells the real life stories of transgender youths.

My Transgender Kid sheds light on what life is really like for people making the incredibly challenging, yet brave transition.

In the clip below, Paddy and her father (also named Paddy) engage in a conversation about the transition. As the 7-year-old explains to her father very matter-of-factly: "Actually I never wanted to be a girl, I am a girl."

Paddy's mother, Lorna, says that the transition has been difficult for many family members. As explained by many parents of transgender children, there is this sense of grief as you are mourning the "loss" of one child, to make room for this new identity.

Lorna uses the imagery of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly to symbolize the transition. There is obvious emotion in her voice, as the transition is a complex one.

"I loved and supported still wondering why, till the day my boy said goodbye. Sometimes I miss my caterpillar boy, but my butterfly girl fills my heart with joy."

Born in the Wrong Body is a series on U.K.'s Channel 4, and this season, focusses on transgender children. According to The Independent, the series is "sensitively handled and heartbreaking."
