Here’s Why Scientists Say You Should Stop Raking Your Leaves

With autumn come many changes. Those include colder weather, less sunlight, and, of course, many leaves everywhere.

For homeowners, these piles of leaves on the lawn can be a big annoyance. Aside from finding the time to clean up the mess, it's also hard to keep them away. Despite various genius tricks to pick up those leaves (who could forget about the method from the Fix It Home Improvement Channel?), they still manage to pile up in what feels like no time at all.

But here's some good news: there might not be a reason to stress yourself with those pesky leaves any longer. According to the National Wildlife Federation, aka a "voice for wildlife," you should avoid raking leaves to protect the environment.

"Leave leaves on the ground — they have a lot of benefit to wildlife and your garden," the organization writes on its website.

Who would have thought?!

"All those childhood years of being forced to rake the leaves for hours when I could have been inside watching cartoons! I will never reclaim all those lost hours and hours and hours!" one commenter joked under ABC's video.
