When San Jose State professor Betty Chu first laid her eyes on the giant ball of fluff she fell in love. The strange creature? An angora rabbit.
Ida the English Angora has soft fur that can grow as long as 10 or more inches, which is a huge feat for the small critter. Francesca the rabbit, however, is in the Guinness Book of World Records for growing 14.37 inches of wool. But that was last year in 2014. Now Francesca is a mother. Because her "boyfriend" can't find the correct parts to mate with her, Betty had to trim Fran's gorgeous hair so they could have a few babies.
Betty has bred and cared for 50 of the prize-winning rabbits for over 34 years. When her friend took her to see an Angora show she knew it was love at first sight.
"I saw 'em. Fell in love with 'em and got to have 'em," she says. She grooms eight to twelve rabbits every single day to keep them nice and primped. Betty says a high quality rabbit grows about an inch of wool a month.
