Man Discovers His Grandparents’ 100-Year-Old Wedding Cake In The Garage

We all wish we could have something that could remind us of our loved ones.

Some families pass down heirlooms and little keepsakes from one generation to the next, hoping to preserve the memory of those who came before us.

And while many memories are lost with the passing of time, some people have made incredible finds right in their homes, like this man who found footage from his grandparents' 1944 wedding day.

Very recently, Ronald Warninger made a breathtaking discovery while cleaning out his garage.

He dusted off a portion of his grandparents' 100-year-old wedding cake, which had been hiding high up on a shelf in the garage.

Luckily, he found it just in time for the 100th anniversary of his grandparents' 1915 wedding!

News of one man’s remarkable discovery has taken the Internet by storm.

Not long ago, Ronald Warninger, 67, was cleaning out his garage when he spotted something on a shelf that his family thought had been lost forever.

It was a circular, plum-colored hatbox. What was kept inside? A portion of his grandparents’ 100-year-old wedding cake.

Ronald’s grandparents, Harvey and Inez, wed on March 17, 1915 — but never got around to finishing their wedding cake.

After Harvey passed away in 1944, Inez handed over the top tier of the wedding cake to Ronald’s parents.

“My grandparents didn’t have a good freezer and my folks bought one of those upright freezers and I remember it being packed in tin foil and being told, ‘You’re not allowed to touch that,’” Ronald told ABC News.

A little more than a decade ago, Ronald moved the cake into his own home — but lost track of where he had stored it.

Of course, the cake is now inedible.

But anyone could tell that it has immaculately kept its shape, with its off-white icing that “sounds like porcelain when you tap it with your fingernail."

But there was another incredible discovery alongside the cake: his grandmother Inez’s memory book.

Inside, there is a poem dating back to 1905, written by Nellie, one of Inez’s friends.

Penned 10 years before Inez and Harvey got married, the note predicted how the marriage would flourish.

“Dear Inez —
Remember me when far away,
And only half awake,
Remember me on your wedding day,
And send me a slice of cake.”

Ronald has since passed the cake along to his daughter, Jenny, who hopes to preserve it for her own children.

It is certainly a relic of a past era, a symbol of longevity, and of the love that Ronald’s grandparents had for each other.

“[The cake] is in perfect shape. It’s been in and out of freezers and been handled a lot. It’s lived through a couple world wars,” Ronald told ABC News.

May it remain this perfect for the next 100 years to come!
