In 1976, Dolly Parton was riding a high wave of popularity with several hit songs and acclaimed movie roles under her belt. Her star was shining so bright, in fact, that she was given her own series of televised variety specials for an entire season. The episodes featured the iconic country singer inviting her famous friends to come perform in silly sketches and, of course, sing a few songs together.
Of all the amazing guests and wonderful moments throughout the 26-episode run, this rendition of an old gospel song remains one of the biggest highlights. Parton is joined by her pals Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris, both already super successful in their own right. They each performed separately earlier in the evening, but together they create stunning harmonies by combining their amazing vocals.
The talented ladies actually spent much of the '70s attempting to record an album together, but because they all belonged to different labels and had their own busy schedules, things were tricky. They would have to wait until 1987 to make that album a reality, but while they waited, the country queens covered this beautiful tune written by James B. Coates in 1946, "The Sweetest Gift."
The emotional and heartfelt lyrics tell a story of a mother visiting her son in prison. There is speculation that the song is referring to a spiritual reunion in heaven rather than a physical one on earth, an interpretation which makes this exquisite version all the more moving.
