Beth from Make Me Pretty Again wanted to do something new and interesting on her large, vaulted living room ceiling. The entire room needed a makeover, and Beth decided she was going to use some reclaimed wood to create a herringbone pattern on her ceiling.
Not only does the end result lighten up the entire room, but it really makes the formerly bare and bland space alluring and refreshing.

Beth started off with a huge pile of 100-year-old reclaimed Douglas fir wood.
She stained and painted the planks of wood with a weathered grey stain, a sunbleached stain, and mixtures of white and grey paint.
The wood was originally made for flooring, so Beth's husband cut off the tongue of the planks and shortened them to three feet in length.
They then measured the ceiling to find the center and marked the measurements in chalk.
They then found the 45-degree angle in the middle of the ceiling and started laying the first boards.
The boards were secured to the ceiling with Liquid Nails, as well as a pneumatic nailer.
They needed to check often to make sure that the angle of the boards were still at 45 degrees. If one board was askew, the whole ceiling would be thrown off!
Beth was able to reach some of the ceiling to nail it in securely. For the rest, it was necessary to bring in a large ladder.
After two days of working on the ceiling, Beth placed the final piece of wood.
The results were truly gorgeous, especially with their beautiful golden chandelier.
It took them a long time and a lot of work, but the ceiling turned out to be a spectacular sight to behold.
After finishing the ceiling, Beth laid down silver travertine flooring with a stunning Venetian pattern to bring the whole living room together.
