Woodworker Transforms Ugly Wood Scraps Into Mesmerizing Table Designs

There are so many talented artists, designers, woodworkers, and home DIY-ers out there who really have a talent for conceptualizing the most intriguing patterns, and for bringing them to life.

I loved the way this DIY-er built his "bacon gate" with wavy wood — it is definitely one of the most unique pieces of its kind out there!

Made By Woodhand is a start-up company specializing in such designs made from salvaged and reclaimed wood.

The owner and founder first started building wooden tables as a part of her personal DIY projects, but was soon picked up by a bigger firm, and commissioned to craft a series of decorative tables.

These tables turned out to be absolutely stunning. Below, we show just a few of these quilt-inspired tabletops, each with its own unique puzzle pattern.

Made By Woodhand is an incredible DIY start-up company in Brooklyn, New York.

Its mission is to transform scavenged materials and to mold them into impressive pieces of art and furniture.

The founder and owner has “always been a maker of one thing or the other, a tinkerer, a builder, a dumpster diver, and general scavenging packrat,” she wrote on BoredPanda.

In the beginning, she loved using wood to build tree houses, but realized right after college that she had to use salvaged materials in a more practical, economical way.

To help save money, she started collecting old lumber from all over the city, and designed tabletops, decorative panels, and even an indoor tree house for her friend’s art show.

Retail stores picked up on her talent, and soon commissioned her for multiple projects.

She was even tapped by the Frye Company, a company with deep all-American artisan roots, to craft a series of tables out of salvaged wood for their stores.

After this breakthrough, Made By Woodhand finally became its own business, and put in place its own unique set of design techniques.

One of the inspirations for all the woodwork is founded in the owner’s Southern roots in Birmingham, Alabama.

And though this nostalgic element will always pervade through her pieces, all designs fundamentally draw from a wide range of aesthetics.

We were drawn to the beautiful, geometric, quilt-like patterns in a lot of her designs.

Though quite angular and symmetric, and, in a sense, more “modern,” these creations are quite extraordinary.

“After I had finished a few designs, I realized I was starting to pull inspiration from old quilt patterns I have always loved,” she wrote.

She used several different kinds of salvaged wood for each table, and, as a result, each tabletop “became a kind of puzzle to create the design I had in mind with the tones and colors of the wood I had left.”
