Jesse Tyler Ferguson has always been an amazing dad on Modern Family. Now he's going to get to experience the real thing. The 44-year-old actor revealed that he and husband Justin Mikita are expecting their first child!
Jesse appeared on Wednesday's episode of The Late Late Show With James Corden. During a conversation with fellow guest Charlie Hunnam about entering his 40s, he revealed the big news. "Actually, this is something I haven’t even mentioned to anyone, if we could just keep it between the three of us and you all, but I’m actually expecting a baby in July with my husband," he gushed. James' jaw dropped when he processed the news.
Jesse and Justin have been together since 2010. They got engaged in 2012 and married in 2013. Just months after their big day, Jesse already had kids on the brain. He joked to People that he and Justin would have "a Kate Gosselin situation."
For the last decade, Jesse Tyler Ferguson has played an incredible dad in his role as Mitchell Pritchett in Modern Family. Now we'll get to see Jesse as a dad in real life. The 44-year-old and his 34-year-old husband, Justin Mikita, are expecting their first child.
Jesse revealed the news during an appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden. Jesse was talking to James and fellow guest Charlie Hunnam on the significance of entering your 40s. "It’s when you finally become an adult, I feel," Jesse said of the milestone.
"Like, 'I need to start getting serious about things,'" he continued. "Actually, this is something I haven’t even mentioned to anyone if we could just keep it between the three of us and you all, but I’m actually expecting a baby in July with my husband." The news sent the audience into a cheering frenzy.
James' jaw literally dropped. "Oh my God," he gasped.
"Let's just keep this between us," Jesse joked. "I’m very excited, but it feels like I’m 44 now, let’s get this show going. Tick tock."
James then asked if Jesse knew whether they'd be welcoming a boy or a girl. "A human," Jesse replied.
"You are going to make the best parents, the two of you," James congratulated. You could tell James and Charlie were genuinely excited for Jesse and Justin.
Jesse and Justin were married in 2013 after nearly three years together. It was life imitating art, in a sense. On Modern Family, Mitchell is a lawyer. Justin is a real-life lawyer. Now the two will be adding a child to their family, much like Mitchell and Cam.
Jesse was already discussing his desire for children a few months after he and Justin said "I do."
"At least eight, minimum!" he joked to People, saying a "Kate Gosselin situation" would be ideal. He would continue to talk about his dream of a big family after the couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary.
"We are very excited to start a family," Jesse said. "We don’t have any sort of timeline right now. When you have to look for alternate means, there’s a little more planning that has to go into that, so who knows."
"When we start the process it might still be a three-year ordeal," he acknowledged. Certainly, it makes sense not to try to tie the idea to a timeline, especially when you're in the public eye. As Jesse noted, "We’ll see what happens!"
While Jesse is opening many new doors in his life right now, he's also dealing with the difficult closing of one. The cast of Modern Family is reflecting on the series as it draws to a close. Jesse touched on it during his Late Late Show appearance.
"It's incredibly sad," he explained. Not only is the cast amazing together on-screen, but they're close behind the scenes as well.
"It's something I've been doing for 11 years — that's like first through eleventh grade as a kid. That's a lifetime. We'll never have a job this good."
"I'm big with an 'Irish exit.' I do not like long goodbyes, so maybe that's what I'll do," Jesse mused. "After my last scene I'll just leave the lot and just drive home. I think that's the only way I'll be able to manage this. It's really emotional."
It's definitely a hard goodbye, but James put it in perspective. "On your last day of 'Modern Family,' knowing what we know now, you should think I'm leaving 'Modern Family' behind, but come July, you're going to make your new modern family — and it's going to be beautiful," he said. Jesse looked touched by the idea.
Congratulations are certainly in order for Jesse and Justin! We're sure that their new little addition is going to light up their lives. This is one of the upcoming celebrity babies we simply can't wait to meet!
