These days, it can be tough to know exactly what is in your food. Unfortunately, that means there may be certain ingredients that contain additive linked to illnesses – including cancer.
We've compiled a list of foods that have chemicals that have been shown to increase your risk of developing cancer. Of course, there are many factors that may increase or decrease your risk, but avoiding these foods wouldn't hurt either.
More than one of these foods-to-avoid surprised me. Please SHARE with your friends if you feel the same way!
Processed Meats
Processed meats tend to sodium nitrates, which can keep the meat looking fresh, but is also a cancer risk factor. They also contain a lot of sodium, which can lead to all sorts of problems, primarily high blood pressure.
Potato Chips
Potato chips are also high in sodium along with everything that entails. Additionally, the frying process creates a material called acrylamide, which is a carcinogen that can also be found in cigarettes.
Excessive Alcohol
In moderation, alcohol is fine and can even have health benefits! In excess, however, it can increase your risk of all sorts of cancers, including mouth cancer, liver cancer, and colon cancer.
Red Meat
Like alcohol, there's no problem with having red meat in moderation. Studies found that eating it every day, however, can greatly increase your cancer risk.
Soda
Hopefully you knew to be consuming soda in moderation anyway. It's loaded with sugars that you really shouldn't be having too much of, on top of colorings and other chemicals that may act as carcinogens.
Microwave Popcorn
The chemicals in the bags microwave popcorn comes in can leech into the popcorn and have been shown to cause cancer in mice. It also often contains a chemical called diacetyl that can cause lung disease.
Pickled Foods
Pickled foods are very high in salt. As we've already mentioned, it's not very healthy and too many pickled foods can increase your risk of stomach cancer.
Refined Sugar
Sugar is another one of those things that isn't great to have in excess. Too much sugar may increase the growth rate of cancer cells.
Unwashed Fruits & Pesticides
Pesticides can have all sorts of adverse health effects, including cancer. Certain fruits, like non-organic apples, are at a higher risk of carrying pesticides so make sure you wash them well!
Bacon
If you've been paying attention, this one shouldn't be a huge surprise. Salty red meat is something you shouldn't have with regularity if you want to stay healthy.
Grilled Foods
Grilling out with the family and friends is fun, but be wary of doing it too often. The charred compounds can lead to increased cancer risk.
