Due to the stay-at-home orders, all of us are taking on new roles. Some of us are becoming homeschooling parents. Others are taking on more control with keeping the house clean. But for Jason Momoa, he's taken on the role of a lifetime. He's serving as his children's PE coach.
Being an at-home gym teacher sounds like a lot of fun, but it's vital right now. Keeping kids active will help them release energy in a healthy way, and exercise will likely improve their mood. It's also very much in character for Jason Momoa. If anyone screams "outdoorsy," it's him.
Jason gained notoriety all due to Game of Thrones. In earlier seasons, he played the role of Khal Drogo. Fans were immediately drawn to him, which helped him gain success in films like Aquaman. His career is quite young, but he has a ton of potential. But his home life is equally rich. Jason has been married to fellow actor Lisa Bonet since 2017.
But even though their marriage is fresh, their relationship has been going on for quite some time. They've been linked for over 14 years. Since both of them seem to enjoy keeping parts of their life private, most people had no idea that they've been in love for such a long time.
Oddly enough, Jason actually had a little crush on her back in 1987. At the time, Lisa was starring in The Cosby Show and was a household name. "Ever since I was like, 8 years old and I saw her on the TV, I was like, ‘Mommy, I want that one,'" Jason told James Corden back in 2017.
Jason even admitted that she stalked Lisa. He didn't tell her at the time, since obviously that's not a great impression. But when they finally met at a jazz club, Jason said it was just the "right place and right time" for their relationship to blossom. That meetup happened in 2005.
"I actually had dreaded my hair for her," Jason told James. "I had dreadlocks, she had dreadlocks. I literally turned around and I see her and she goes, ‘I’m Lisa.’ I turned around to my friend and I [pretends to scream]. I had fireworks going off inside, man. I convinced her to take me home, because I was living in a hotel."
Jason's dedication meant a lot to Lisa, who said they've been attached ever since. "In that moment, love came and it came big, and he did not run as I think a lot of men do," she said to Porter magazine. "He basically picked me up and threw me over his shoulder, caveman style!"
The marriage was the second for Lisa, who was famously paired with musician Lenny Kravitz. As she told Porter, Lenny wasn't always a rock star. In fact, Lisa helped Lenny write some of his first songs. She became pregnant with daughter Zoë and tried hard to protect her during her eventual divorce. "I think there are probably times when these thresholds can either sink you, or you can see who you are and rise and dust yourself off," she said.
She split with Lenny in 1993. Before marrying Jason officially, the two of them had children — a girl named Lola and a boy named Nakoa-Wolf. Lola was born in 2007, and Nakoa-Wolf arrived just a year later. Jason reportedly told People magazine that he finally knew what love was once his children joined the family.
Zoë took the news of her family fantastically well — so much that she was inspired to name her band Lolawolf after her two younger siblings. She's in the band with fellow Brooklyn musicians Jimmy Giannopoulos and James Levy.
One of the sweetest things about Jason and Lisa's marriage is that it's legit. Let's not forget the 2020 Golden Globes, when Jason was spotted wearing just a tank top instead of something more formal. It's not that he didn't come prepared — he had lent his jacket to Lisa because she was cold.
He's probably wearing a similar tank while at home teaching PE to his kids. Jason revealed his new title to Ellen DeGeneres during a video chat. "I’m kind of like the PE coach, you know, get your [expletive] outside, we’re gonna go rock climb, skateboard," he said. Truth be told, it might be a better opportunity than the kids get back at school.
Jason just seems like the type of person to dive into physical activity. "I rarely get to be home, so it’s pretty special," he said. "We’ve got skateboard ramps and climbing walls and throwing tomahawks and shooting bow and arrow, so we have a little bit of space. I feel very thankful."
Having to stay at home is definitely a benefit for parents everywhere. They might not be used to it, but now's the perfect time to really get to know your kids. Jason, in general, has been outside his house (yet still staying safe) throughout most of this time away from work.
“I’ve been walking, riding my bike and trying to thin out a little bit," he told Ellen. "I’ve been getting a little heavy." Speaking of workouts, he'll eventually be developing more of a routine. Aquaman 2 has been announced, and it's been rumored to have a 2022 release. Of course, with studios closed, that could very well be pushed back.
Jason Momoa is a reminder that there are all sorts of teachers out there. If you're having trouble homeschooling your kids, you might be able to see if you're more effective outside, like Jason. As long as your kids are moving and enjoying the spring weather, they'll have an easier time getting through this.
