While you may typically think of raccoons as wild woodland animals, they also can make for excellent pets!
They can make for fun and goofy albeit strange companions, although they are not pets in the same way that dogs and cats are, both of which have been bred for domestication for thousands of years.
Anyone interested in owning a raccoon as a pet must remember that they have a will of their own and will generally do as they please, and have a variety of special needs.
Currently a debate exists in the pet community as to whether or not people should be cohabitating with coons.
Some argue that keeping a pet raccoon is both illegal and unsafe, as they are not fully domesticated animals, can be very messy and may attack humans, while others worry that their coons will not survive if left to fend for themselves out in the wild. Raccoons are also known to carry illnesses such as distemper, rabies and giardia.
However, fans of coons say that they make for very fun pets so long as their pet parents are prepared to meet their needs and keep them well-supervised. Furthermore, forcing people who own a pet coon to give it up would be just as traumatic as forcing a family to give up their dog or cat.
For those mischievous critters who have settled into life with a human (and maybe some fellow animal) companions, they'll certainly learned to love it!
